Ministry of Education in Israel issues the formal instructions to end the use of mobile phones in elementary schools

Few months ago we reported that the ministry of education is about to ban the use mobile phones in elementary schools in Israel. Today we are happy to report that the formal instructions have been issued to the schools and to the press.

The instructions in general lines:
1. The use of mobile phones in schools, classes and recess will not be allowed.
2. The phones should be turned off and insert in to the bag.
3. Digital learning will be done using the schools' computers.
4. Kids will be allowed to use the phones to coordinate pickups and drop offs, before entering and exiting the school.

I would like to congratulate the Minister of education, Rabi Rafi Peretz, and the activist and parents that contributed to this, around Israel.

I am sure this move just made our schools a bit better.

A smart phone burst into flames in the pocket of a 9 years old kid

The problem I have with the report of this incident on the Israeli news is that almost no one wondered what does a 9 years old kid doing with a smart phone.
It has become so usual here in Israel, and in the rest of the world, that kids are given smart phones that no one think it is strange any more.
Parents (that are usually cellphone addicted themselves) give their old device to their kids when they buy themselves a new one.

Smart phones emit RF Radiation most of the time
Smart phone, unlike old mobile phones (that emit RF only while talking or SMS), emits Radio Frequency radiation most of the time as long as they are connected to the cellular data, WIFI and Bluetooth. The time of emission is increased as the use of application, messaging, and surfing increased.
The emission is even greater if the communication is done in LTE than in UMTS.

When and how has it become OK for a 9 years old to have a smart phone?
Well, as long as the parents are addicted, as long as the ministry of health give only "soft" warnings, as long as the ministry of education allow and push for cellphone, wireless tablets and laptops in schools, as long as industry develop devices for kids, as long as the World health organisation is reluctant to take farther action, as long as the exposure standards are based on heat and not health, as long people don't understand how and when they devices radiates, as long as people who report health effects from RF and EMF exposure are considered crazy, as long as all the above still happens, kids are going to be smart phone users at a very young age.
I believe this will lead to them being able to feel pain when exposed to RF and ELF (becoming Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitive) , and some will even suffer from cancer, before they will have kids themselves.

“Crown Jewels Underwear” to protect sperm is not the best idea

As more and more scientific prof of harm will appear regarding the health risk of RF radiation and cell phone use, more and more products that are meant to protect the user and to allow him to continue using the radiating phone will appear. To my opinion it is a cheaper and better idea to reduce the use of your cell phone (will cost nothing and will be more effective). For people who are not EHS I suggest to keep the phone as far away as possible from the body, turn off the 3G/4G data, WIFI and Bluetooth most of the time. Prefer the use of wired landline phones and when must use the smart phone with speaker phone function or wired earpiece.

The Israeli government is confused about wireless technologies.

People from around the world asked me in the past few days if 4G was banded in Israel.

No, it was not officially banded .

The government in Israel is acting in two opposite directions regarding the wireless issue. From one side warning about the use of cell phone and other wireless devices where issued by the ministry of health and the ministry of environment protection, and on the other hand it seems that wireless technologies are being deployed and pushed to the public with the approval of the government, sometimes by the government and municipal governments .

For example, this is the case with WIFI in schools, where a comity (with representatives from ministry of health, the ministry of environment protection and the ministry of education) issued a report that 'call" for wired Internet in schools, and according to its' report mobile phone use was limited in schools ( (Hebrew posts, please use translator - http://www.tapuz.co.il/blog/ViewEntry.asp?EntryId=2125366). In addition to that wireless water smart meters are being deployed in Israel as we speak, again very quietly… sh…sh…sh…the public is sleeping!

Some people here say that what the ministry of environment and health are doing is deliberately in order to show to the public that they are doing all they can about this issue, while still allowing the wide spread of wireless technologies.

On the Knesset front (the Israeli parliament) there are several MK that are trying contently working to create new lows regarding public awareness of the danger from wireless technologies and protection of the public from the non heat related health effect. Leading this group are MK Yulia Shamalov Berkovich and Dov Khenin who purposed a new low that will require health warning labels to be put on cellphones (http://norad4u.blogspot.com/2012/03/new-bill-that-will-require-health.html) . I think the government is very confused. I think most of them never measured the RF levels from a wireless router, several laptops working in the same room, smart meters, cellphone antenna, cell phones, and any other RF or ELF sources. I think that none of them is an EHS, none of them suffered from RF or ELF EMR. I think that they know only a small part of the science proof for the damage caused by RF and ELF EMR, and even if they do know it, their interpretation is wrong. I think they are all very limited in their views, knowledge and actions.

But on the other hand I am very naïve; maybe all of this is just a very big spin!

The WHO (http://www.who.int/en/) and IARC (http://www.iarc.fr/)resolution from last week about RF radiation being "POSSIBLY CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS" is a, "Too little, (almost) too late" conclusion. All the science is available for many years now, and a more drastic conclusion should have been accepted years ago. It seems like the conditions for such a soft decision have lately become right as the science pointing out for risk and harm caused by "low power" RF signals like those that are emitted from cellphones, WIFI routers and other wireless devices and equipment, have piled up, and can no longer be rejected or ignored. The WHO and IARC have came under pressure by reality, and they could no longer hold their old view that there is no risk in exposure to RF radiation. The WHO and IARC holdup of their old views, until few days ago, allowed the deployment of wireless networks around the world, while exposing billions of people to this harming RF radiation. Lennart Hardell, and a study that was done by Yael Stein and Elihu Richter from the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine in Jerusalem (). All of these research showed a link between exposure to RF radiation and cancer.

In the next few years cellphone companies, manufacturers and distributors, backed up by paid science will try to buy more time on the expense of our health. They will argue that "cell phones today emit less RF radiation that they used to, and that new generations of cell phones will emit even less". They will try to discredit the science that shows the link between RF radiation and cancer, and will try to prove otherwise. They will do anything in their power to stop new laws and regulations that could protect the public and will then say that they act within laws and regulation. They will try to buy their way into committees and decision making boards and will try to influence the future, all so they can make an extra dollar before the public will understand the truth. We must do our best to show the truth and to prevent this from happening.

I think that some radiation is still being emitted from the mobile phone, and since I think there is no safe level of EMR radiation than this is still bad.

In addition this kind of solutions can, at the end, encourage people to use their mobile phones, and by that will eventually increase the EMR levels that the public is exposed to both from the antenna and the mobile phone.

There is no magic solution for this issue. I guess that this green antenna can be part of a wider solution that will lower the radiation levels that the public is exposed to both from the mobile phone and from the antennas.

What went wrong with the interphone study

The interphone study that was published this week and made a lot of headlines. After the dust of the battle slowly disappear the facts and problems of the study are shown clearly at the light of day.

Problems in the study:

1. "A regular user" is defined as a person how used the cellphone as much as for 30 minutes a month for half a year. The problem is that this is a very low use time, average in the world today is about 2 hours a month, every month!
2. The heaviest users in the study used their cellphone for more than 1640 hours in 10 years, meaning about 27 minutes each day. The problem is that today heavy users talk much more than that, actually most of the people I know talk more than that.
3. Users reported their use pattern using a form. In some cases their use pattern was reported by other persons. The problem is that this method is not consistence and not 100% accurate as people who don't use the phone a lot tend to report more use, and people that uses the phone a lot tend to report lower use.
4. Exposure to other types of electromagnetic radiation was not considered. The problem is that those how reported no use at all, may have been exposed to electromagnetic radiation which could have cause them cancer. This would cause the ratio between healthy people and sick people in the control group (who did not use the cellphone) to be higher than in reality (more sick people in the control group than in the real world). This will lead to OR <1>
5. People who died or were too sick before the study was finished were deducted from the study even if their data was already acquired. The problem is that this operation will reduce the number of people with cancer in all the users groups.

My conclusion is that this study has 2 final true results:

1. People how speak more than 27 minutes a day have a higher chance of developing brain cancer.
2. All this study outcomes are lower than in reality because of all the problems in it.

The truth about the interphone study

The interphone study final result ware published today (17/05/2010), after 5 years of delay. a first look suggests that using a mobile phone actually protect you from brain cancer, how could that be? a second look shows that people who use their mobile phone for more then 27 minutes per day have 40%higher risk of getting a brain tumor.

Ministry to keep close watch on cellular antennas’ radiation

The Environmental Protection Ministry will start monitoring the radiation levels emitted from mobile phone antennas by using a special designed system that will track the RF power outputs of mobile phone base station all over the country.
I don't think the system will be able to monitor the EMR levels in the environment but only to calculate them (not very accurate and does not takes into consideration buildings, metal objects and other radiation sources). In addition the standard in Israel is still high (42 microWatt/cm2) but all in all this is a good step forward and it might allow to better regulate the mobile phone networks.
